peRFect Tennis

Welcome to the peRFect Tennis Blog! If you're passionate about tennis, especially Roger Federer, you've found the right spot. I launched this blog in mid-2011, inspired primarily by Roger Federer himself. My first real introduction to him was during his incredible victory over Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001. I remember Boris Becker mentioning that we might be witnessing the rise of a player who could become number one and dominate the sport for years – and he was absolutely correct. Since that moment, I have closely followed Roger's journey, and I can hardly recall a match I haven't seen in the last nine years. That's how peRFect Tennis came into existence!

It all looked like another faux pas from Novak Djokovic. The idea of setting up an alternative body to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) seemed ludicrous, given that the organisation had shepherded the development of men’s tennis since 1972. It represented players and most of the tournaments that the professional calendar had to offer.

What I found so interesting when Novak Djokovic won his 24th major and 4th US Open title is that it was a complete reversal of the 2021 US Open final. Daniil Medvedev, not Novak Djokovic, was the champion there, winning in a highly unforeseen and frankly bizarre scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. What on earth happened? After winning all three previous majors that year, Djokovic was on top of the tennis world and was attempting to go for the “calendar grand slam”.

Most Roger Federer fans will claim the Swiss master remains an absolute great in tennis history. In fact, the greatest of all time. For these fans, greatness is more about the grand slam count. His elegant style of play, tactical imagination, and gentlemanly approach on and off the court make him an all-around athlete – a kind of perfect concoction that distinguishes him from other skilled players who don’t have quite the same blend of qualities. And I would agree with most of that.

Even long before the match against Novak Djokovic, commentators and analysts were conjecturing what it would mean if Carlos Alcaraz won the Wimbledon final. When the Spaniard dispatched Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, a potential Alcaraz title victory was compared to Roger Federer’s fourth-round victory over Pete Sampras at the 2001 Championships.
