CRH appoints new CFO

Creed to succeed Umpleby as Caterpillar CEO

Jim Umpleby will take over as executive chairman of the board at Caterpillar on May 1. Umpleby has served Caterpillar as CEO over the last seven-plus years. Joe Creed, a 28-year Caterpillar employee, will succeed Umpleby as CEO and join the company’s board of directors May 1. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Caterpillar’s dedicated global team of employees and dealers for my entire career,” Umpleby says.
Rogers Group completes deal in Appalachia

Rogers Group (RGI) expanded in eastern Kentucky and the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee with the acquisition of Albany Quarry, Albany Asphalt and Jamestown Stone. The three acquired companies collectively employ about 35 people. “The acquisition of Albany Quarry, Albany Asphalt and Jamestown Stone marks a significant milestone for Rogers Group as we continue to grow and serve more communities in Kentucky and beyond,” says Jimmy Patton, RGI president and CEO.
Martin Marietta CFO Nickolas resigns

Jim Nickolas, executive vice president and CFO of Martin Marietta, resigned last week. Martin Marietta shared the development in an organizational announcement. Bob Cardin was appointed interim CFO, reporting to chair and CEO Ward Nye. Cardin will also continue to serve Martin Marietta as senior vice president, controller and chief accounting officer. Martin Marietta initiated a search process of internal and external candidates to identify its next CFO.
MSHA delaying enforcement of silica rule for coal

The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) temporarily paused enforcement of its final rule lowering miners’ exposure to respirable crystalline silica, delaying it for the coal industry until Aug. 18 of this year. The silica rule was set to be effective for coal operations today. In a notice to stakeholders, MSHA sights unforeseen restructuring at the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health and other technical reasons as driving the four-month pause.

The Georgia Construction Aggregate Association (GCAA) hosted its annual Management Workshop & Expo at Cobb Galleria in Atlanta. This year’s event broke an attendance record with 675 people on-site. Ninety-three industry companies exhibited at the show, and six pieces of heavy equipment were showcased. Among the exhibiting companies was Superior Industries, which was represented by Austin Schmidgall (far left), Josh Hoelscher (third from left) and Allan Gibson (far right).
