Pehgee Agnes Boholst Aranas, who was previously employed by a First Nation as a principal at a certified band school, has received a three-day suspension and been ordered to take educational courses after she spanked an Indigenous student, according to a consent resolution agreement shared online by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. Aranas was first reported to the commissioner in December 2023, a month after she spanked a Grade 1 student at the band school.

A number of buildings in Duncan’s downtown core were spray painted with hateful and derogatory messages sometime during the evening of June 14. The Duncan post office on Ingram Street, the building across the street from the post office housing Mann’s Prescription Guardian Pharmacy and Mountainview Dental, the Telus building on Canada Avenue, and the Duncan Garage Cafe & Bakery on Duncan Street were among the victims of the spray painter(s).

A Beaver Creek couple is reeling after their mobile home went up in flames Saturday morning. Beaver Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. personnel responded to a call about a fire in the 6300-block of Smith Road around 8:30 a.m. Firefighters from Port Alberni, Cherry Creek and Sproat Lake departments as well as BC Emergency Health Services (ambulance crew) all responded to assist. Crews were able to keep the fire away from trees behind the home, according to witnesses.

It’s definitely been awhile since I sat down and read a full novel. I really wasn’t sure if I would ever get back into reading again, mainly because I find when you spend most of your time writing for a living, it’s tough to push yourself to want to sit down and read other people’s work in your free time.
