Along the first base line on the high school softball diamond at Brookfield’s Ehlert Park, five-year-old Gus zoomed by on his wheelchair, a big grin on his face. He was dressed in a bright yellow shirt with black short sleeves and a black cap with the bill upturned. Nearby, near home plate, his dad, Kevin Boyle, was smiling too. “Gus can’t talk, so it’s always hard to tell what Gus enjoys, but it’s also nice to get him involved in things a typical child would do,” Boyle said.

Senior shortstop Sean Campbell and his Riverside Brookfield High School baseball teammates hoped to play local rival Nazareth Academy in the Class 3A Nazareth Regional final. Despite a strong effort, however, the Bulldogs lost to Oak Lawn 4-1 in the regional semifinals Thursday. “It is just disappointing how many barrels we put on balls that were just right at somebody, but I think we played well,” Campbell said.

Riverside Brookfield High School senior Matthew Torrens certainly took the thoughts of a good vault friend to heart at his first Class 3A boys track and field state meet Friday. “He was like, ‘The third attempt is the best attempt,’” said Torrens, who will always remember the last height he cleared for the Bulldogs during prelims at Eastern Illinois University. Not only was clearing 4.30 meters/14 feet-1¼ inches his second lifetime best of the day to tie for 13th.
