Ben Lupfer is among many seniors who has seen the Riverside Brookfield High School boys lacrosse program come a long way. With the Bulldogs in their fourth varsity season, He has lived the program’s growing pains and progress since day one as a freshman. “It’s grown a lot. The federal Department of Government Efficiency has notified Brookfield Zoo that $78,000 in funding for a bio-diversity and animal welfare program has been cut, POLITICO’s Illinois Playbook reported April 15. The POLITICO story noted that much of the funding for that program has already been delivered to the zoo.

Nineteen conservation and veterinary science research programs, ranging from dusky gopher frogs in Mississippi to spider monkeys in Bolivia, have received nearly $140,000 in grants from the Chicago Board of Trade Endangered Species Fund. The seed funding, administered by Brookfield Zoo and announced April 7, supports global projects focused on species conservation, wildlife health and field research.

Riverside Brookfield High School senior Brady Norman hoped for a faster 3,200-meter run in his second trip to the Class 3A boys track and field state meet last season. He couldn’t have asked for a much better conclusion to this indoor season. Norman ran an all-time school record 9:17.65, finishing ninth at the Illinois Indoor Championships at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track at Chicago’s Gately Center. The previous record was 9:25.83 by Rich Slaughter in 1991.

Seniors Ella Caputo, Lucy Drenth, Isa Hernandez and Raleigh Jesswein have experienced plenty through four years together as varsity players for the Riverside Brookfield High School girls soccer program. “I think that each year, it’s a different atmosphere. Obviously, freshman year we started off kind of timid being a little nervous,” Hernandez said. “Now as seniors we’re kind of being the ones in charge and setting the example, trying to get everyone excited and into it.
