Ben Lupfer is among many seniors who has seen the Riverside Brookfield High School boys lacrosse program come a long way. With the Bulldogs in their fourth varsity season, He has lived the program’s growing pains and progress since day one as a freshman. “It’s grown a lot. Riverside Brookfield High School senior Brady Norman hoped for a faster 3,200-meter run in his second trip to the Class 3A boys track and field state meet last season. He couldn’t have asked for a much better conclusion to this indoor season. Norman ran an all-time school record 9:17.65, finishing ninth at the Illinois Indoor Championships at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track at Chicago’s Gately Center. The previous record was 9:25.83 by Rich Slaughter in 1991.

Seniors Ella Caputo, Lucy Drenth, Isa Hernandez and Raleigh Jesswein have experienced plenty through four years together as varsity players for the Riverside Brookfield High School girls soccer program. “I think that each year, it’s a different atmosphere. Obviously, freshman year we started off kind of timid being a little nervous,” Hernandez said. “Now as seniors we’re kind of being the ones in charge and setting the example, trying to get everyone excited and into it.

Riverside Brookfield High School senior Ethan Smith has turned a strong 2024 finish into another strong start this baseball season. “I just learned a lot about my approach [at-bat]. I started off very good and then I just learned throughout the season,” Smith said. The starting left fielder is among the reasons the Bulldogs are off to a 5-3 start. Smith has a team-best .481 batting average with three extra-base hits and five runs batted in.

Lyons Township High School senior Nora Ezike finished her historic career with the Lyons Township High School girls basketball team with one last honor. The 6-foot-2 Stanford recruit was named Class 4A first team by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association after being on the third team in 2024. “I was very proud and grateful for the honor,” Ezike said.

Senior all-conference middle hitter Alec Oltrogge finds strength in the Riverside Brookfield High School boys volleyball team’s experienced roster. “My encouragement comes from the drive I get from within my teammates,” Oltrogge said. “We have a lot of great guys with all different experiences that are just really hungry for victory. I think it’s just really awesome to see such incredible people that I get to play with in the most team-centered sport there is.

Xander Plungis celebrated exuberantly while also crying. Plungis and his Riverside Brookfield Junior Bulldogs fifth-grade Blue basketball teammates had just captured their historic state championship, 42-31, over downstate Highland Black in the Silver Division of the Feeder State Championships, March 23, at the University of Illinois Champaign. “I was really happy that we won it all and did what we were trying to do,” Plungis said. “It felt kind of relieving.

Last year, Lyons Township High School senior Ben Wuggazer sprinted for a personal-best time that barely qualified for his first Class 3A boys track and field state meet in the 3,200-meter run by .20 of a second. When it comes to completing school work, Wuggazer rarely cuts it that close. “I’ve just got to keep a schedule a little bit to make sure I’m on top of things both academically and athletically, using my athletic study hall wisely (at LTHS),” Wuggazer said.

The goals of the Riverside Brookfield High School boys lacrosse team go well beyond its first state playoff victory. Entering their fourth season as a varsity program, the Bulldogs return all but one starter from their personal-best 11-6 record in 2024 following two four-win seasons. They lost to Lemont 13-6 in their St. Rita Sectional opener. Junior all-sectional long-stick midfielder/midfielder Xavier Mrozik-DeJesus and 12 seniors lead the charge. “The boys are excited to build off of last season.
