The year 2023 in the Roslyn area had its usual stories of uncontested elections, educational and athletic excellence from the Roslyn School District and first-rate events at the Bryant Library, the Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Village of East Hills. There was only one story that mattered. On May 3, the Roslyn community suffered what Mayor John Durkin called the “saddest day ever” in the village’s history.

No surprise, but the Roslyn School District once again has secured a top ranking in a nationwide survey of public-school districts. Experts at Teach Simple have analyzed reviews and ratings of each school district in the U.S and have ranked them from highest to lowest, 1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest. The scores are based on reviews from parents and students, statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, and user-submitted information from schools.

Henry Kissinger, the famed diplomat who died recently at age 100, was not a native New Yorker. He was born in Furth, Germany. In 1938, when his family fled that country for the United States, the teenage Kissinger was defiant. “I’ll be back,” he told a German official. And that he did. He went back to Germany all right, eventually as the Secretary of State of the United States of America. When the Kissinger family moved to America, they settled in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood.

In these celebrity-driven times, Roslyn native Jesse Itzler knows how to get publicity—and even more publicity. A 1986 graduate of Roslyn High School, Itzler is the son of Elese Itzler, who served as president of the Roslyn Board of Education. Right from the beginning, the man had a knack for creativity. After graduating from American University, Itzler worked as a songwriter for Delicious Vinyl records, ironically enough when vinyl was on its final legs.

The Blumenfeld Development Group (BDG) of Syosset and its partner the Hampshire Companies of Morristown, NJ have finished construction of the self-storage facility at 71 Jane St., declaring it open for business. “The property, which sat dormant and was an eyesore since 2013, encompasses 98,000 sq. ft.
