BY Joe ScotchieConsetta Scotchie (nee Bruno) died on June 25, 2024. Mrs. Scotchie was 92. The deceased is the mother of Joe Scotchie, longtime editor of The Roslyn News. The deceased was born on Nov. 11, 1931, in Youngstown, the first of the daughters born to Julius and Vera Bruno. Mrs. Scotchie attended Austintown Fitch High School, where she mether future husband, Andrew A. Scotchie, also of Austintown. The couple married in 1953.

By Joe ScotchieWho can forget the final out of the 1969 World Series? The New York Mets were up 5-3. They led the series, three games to one. The Baltimore Orioles, heavy favorites to win, had a runner on first with two outs. The Oriole batter, Davey Johnson, a future Mets skipper, crushed a line drive to left field. Johnson later said it was the hardest ball he had ever hit. A home run would have tied the score. Instead, the ball died and landed in the glove of leftfielder Cleon Jones.

In 1966, Bob Dylan was riding high. In just five short years, this obscure songwriter from small-town Minnesota had made his mark, first as the voice of folk music then to the balladeer of folk rock to finally, a limousine-riding rock superstar. On top of that, he journeyed to an unsuspecting Mineola to marry, at a public ceremony, the model Sara Lowndes. Dylan also had a residence at Woodstock. One day, while riding his motorcycle, the helmetless Dylan crashed his bike.

People are sure living longer. The year 2023, as with all others, saw the passing of American notables. Many of those that did perish lived longer than anyone could have imagined in, say, 1923. Jim Brown, the legendary football star, who died in May, was a Manhasset native. A four-sport star at Manhasset High School, Brown was an All-American at Syracuse University before beginning a Hall of Fame career with the Cleveland Browns.

The year 2023 in the Roslyn area had its usual stories of uncontested elections, educational and athletic excellence from the Roslyn School District and first-rate events at the Bryant Library, the Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Village of East Hills. There was only one story that mattered. On May 3, the Roslyn community suffered what Mayor John Durkin called the “saddest day ever” in the village’s history.
