A House bill that would give Texas residentsthe opportunity to vote for or against legal sports betting now has a companion in the Senate. Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa has filed Senate Joint Resolution 65,which would implement a constitutional amendment to allow a statewide vote on sports wagering in November of this year. The legislation is the companion of Rep. Sam Harless’ House Joint Resolution 134 that was filed last month.

The effort to legalize sports betting in Mississippi took a twist this week. After an approved House bill died in the Senate, the House Gaming Committee has added sports betting language to two crossover Senate bills. The Committee is chaired by Rep. Casey Eure, who authored the HB 1302 sports betting measure that crossed chambers late last month after being approved by a resounding 88-10 vote in the House. A New Jersey bill that would ban sportsbooks from partnering with colleges and college sports programs on marketing and advertising has been passed in the state Assembly and sent to the Senate. Assembly Bill 4113, a carry-over of a measure from last year, was approved unanimously with 75 yes votes on the Assembly floor and has been sent over to the Senate Higher Education Committee.

A move by the sponsor of SB60, a bill to bring regualted online casinos to New Hampshire, has the future of the bill this legislative session in doubt. During a meeting of the Senate Ways and Means Committee this week, Sen. Tim Lang recommended tabling the measure even though the committee recommended passage with amendment. Lang did not offer comment or reason for the action during the committee meeting. SBC Americas reached out to Lang’s office for comment but has not received comment.
