REDFIELD – Clark-Willow Lake won a pair of tight games over Redfield in Legion baseball action on Monday. CWL took one game 8-7 and the other 7-4. The visitors plated three runs in the top of the first inning of their one-run win. Redfield plated five runs in the bottom of the second as Tate Bray started the uprising with an RBI double. Clark-Willow Lake tied the game in the third and then scored just enough runs to finish off the win.

WATERTOWN - The individual and team races are close following the opening rounds of the Class B State Boys and Girls golf tournaments on Monday. In the girls' tourney at Prairie Winds Golf Course, just one stroke separates the individual and team leaders. Two-time defending state champion Brynn Roehrich of Clark-Willow Lake leads former state champion Jayce Pugh of Miller by a single stroke after Roehrich carded a 72 and Pugh had a 73. Jadyn McDonald of Chester is right behind with a 74.

VOLGA – Groton produced a pair of big innings in a victory and gave up two big innings in a setback during American Legion baseball action on Sunday. Groton defeated Canton 11-1 and fell to Volga 15-8. Groton had a pair of four-run innings against Canton, both coming with two outs. Teylor Diegel had a two-run single and Braxton Imrie drove in a run in a four-run second frame, and Korbin Kucker and Diegel each drove in a pair in a four-run seventh inning.

The weather was ideal, the competition was intense, and the results were often record-setting during the recent State Track and Field Meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Area athletes captured nearly 20 state championships, six of which were won by either Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern or Spencer Melius of Faulkton. The juniors each garnered three state titles.

WATERTOWN – When the Class B State Boys and Girls Golf Tournaments take place today and Tuesday, there is likely to be some familiar names near the top of the leaderboards. Both defending state champs are back in the fields. Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes won the boys’ individual title last season, while Brynn Roehrich of Clark-Willow is the defending girls’ medalist. Each is coming off recent region championships.
