YANKTON – The Aberdeen Smittys played from behind in one game and owned a lead in the other, but both ended with the same result in a doubleheader sweep by Yankton on Wednesday afternoon. The hosts controlled the opener 9-4, before rallying for a 7-4 win in the second contest. Yankton pulled away from a 1-1 tie in the first game with eight unanswered runs.

GROTON – Both Groton and Clark-Willow Lake scored 20 runs in victories over Spearfish during American Legion baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. Groton scored 15 runs in the top of the first inning on the way to a 20-4 win. The Tigers scored nine runs before the second out was recorded in the frame. They finished with 13 of their 19 hits in the inning. Brevin Fliehs and Jarrett Erdmann each had multiple hits that produced runs in the frame.

However, the Aberdeen native will get the opportunity of a lifetime next month when she competes for the United States during the World University Games in Berlin, Germany. “This is an international meet,” Jorgenson said.

NORTHVILLE – Carson Simes hit for the cycle, drove in four runs and scored four times as the Northville Merchants defeated Groton Locke Electric 11-5 in Amateur baseball action Tuesday night. Simes tripled and scored on a single by Ashton Remily in the first inning, had an RBI double in the third, singled and scored on hit by Greg Heyne in the fourth, and belted a three-run home run in the eighth. Kyle Stahl provided a two-run single in a fourth-run fourth inning.

CLARK – In a doubleheader where hits were at a premium, Clark Area swept a pair of games over Sisseton, 5-4 and 2-0 in American Legion baseball on Monday. Clark scored five runs on just two hits in one game. The hosts scored twice in the first inning when Watson Grantham walked, stole two bases, and scored on a ground out. Will Hovde also walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
