BROOKINGS – Cody Larson picked up the outdoor season where he left off the indoor season. After winning the 3,000 and 5,000-meter races at the Summit League Indoor Championships in February, Larson kicked off the outdoor season with two straight school records in two straight performances. The former Warner standout knocked off Josh Yeager (2021) in the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:34.46, and Craig Cassen (1991) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 8:30.96.

HARRISBURG – Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun opened her season in spectacular fashion, winning the Harrisburg Invitational with a 3-under round of 68 Thursday afternoon. That medalist effort spurred the Golden Eagles to a second place finish in the team race, one stroke back of Mitchell. It was a strong start to a season with high expectations for the Golden Eagles. “Olivia’s game speaks for itself,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman.

HURON – The Aberdeen Central boys’ tennis team split a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference matches Thursday afternoon and is feeling pretty happy with it. The Golden Eagles dropped a tight 5-4 decision to Mitchell before rebounding with an 8-1 victory over Huron. “Feeling really good,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz following the matches. “Going in we thought this would be a good test to see where we’re at ESD-wise.

SIOUX FALLS – Hamlin’s title defense ran into a 6-foot-10 roadblock. Sioux Falls Christian center Griffen Goodbary put together a dominant performance in the paint, finishing with 32 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots – all without committing a foul – to help fuel Christian’s 61-51 win over Hamlin in the Class A State Boys’ Basketball Tournament championship game at the Sanford Premier Center Saturday night.
