The veterans of the state tournament found their way back to the winner’s circle. West Central defeated Tri-Valley 11-1 in the championship bout of the State A softball tournament Saturday, squeezing victory in ahead of impending weather delays. Dell Rapids entered the State A tournament hungry, and a 6-2 opening-round victory over Sioux Valley Thursday afternoon at Players South Complex didn’t do much to satiate the Quarriers. West Central enters this weekend’s State A softball tournament with the best resume – on paper, at least – but the Trojans aren’t resting on past success. The Trojans, having appeared in the last two state title games, are venerable veterans of the tournament by now. West Central won the inaugural state title two seasons ago before settling for the runner-up spot last year and enters this year’s tournament as the top seed.

MADISON – Claire Crawford finished in the runner-up position, while the Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ golf team moved up one position to finish third at the Class A girls’ golf state tournament, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Madison Golf and Country Club. Crawford, who led after Monday’s opening round, slipped into the second position early in Tuesday’s round, but held on to record a second place finish. “I played good the first day,” Crawford said. “I felt good about that.

SIOUX FALLS – There’s not a whole lot more hardware the Aberdeen Central girls’ golf program could have returned home with on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles collected the team trophy, the individual champion, three all-tournament finishers and four all-state performances on the final day of the Class AA girls’ golf state tournament at Prairie Green Country Club.
