    On my last afternoon in Prague, I set out for Kafka’s grave. But having misread the guidebook, I ended up stumbling around a muddy cemetery for over an hour before I found someone to ask for directions. The security guard explained that Kafka was buried elsewhere, in the Jewish cemetery. Obviously. I raced up the road, trying to get there before it closed for the day. I was too late: the tall iron gates were already locked.

    Yesterday Dave and I drove back from Toronto to London where my mother is in the hospital awaiting a spot in a long term care home. She has Alzheimer’s and can no longer live on her own. Although it’s an emotional time, I often choose to feel no emotion so I can just get through it all—looking for appropriate care homes and visiting her in the hospital with no end in sight. As soon as any feelings come up, I shove them back down to keep my emotional state—dead inside.
