San Francisco is known for many quirky and unique things. One that thrills visitors from around the world is the sea lions at Pier 39. These loud and stinky visitors sit on platforms on the western side of the pier at Fisherman's Wharf. I love watching them jockey for positions. Although they are social creatures, they love to fight for their own space on the platforms. Disclaimer: I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

The Behind the Scenes Alcatraz Tour is my favorite way to visit the island. It's a great option if your stay in SF is a little longer, if you are a HUGE Alcatraz history buff, or if you've already done the day tour. I love this tour as it includes a small-group guided tour of the island, which allows you access to areas not open to those on the standard day or night tours. This tour from San Francisco runs once or twice a day, depending on the time of year, and is only open to 30 people per tour.

The colorful Castro district always brings a smile to my face. The people are friendly, everyone has a great sense of humor and there are colors everywhere you look. On my perfect day in this LGBT district, I like to visit Pink Triangle Park, learn about LGBT history at the local museum and enjoy meals at some of its top restaurants.

Sample local and international brews at one of these top San Francisco beer festivals. Many of these events offer a few hours of tasting some of the best craft brews around. Many also invite some of the Bay Area's top food trucks, so you can savor some tasty eats while you enjoy your beer. If you're up for a short day trip, I've also listed some beer events that take place outside of San Francisco in the larger Bay Area. San Francisco in January is cool with some rain. It's a fun time to visit as there are a lot of things happening this time of year including events, concerts, shows, and Golden State Warriors games. Other fun things to do include whale watching, visiting Yosemite, Broadway musicals, and activities around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Read on for tips to plan your vacation this month in SF. I took the picture above last January.
