The Simon Fraser University-led B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI) is investing in 19 new agritech projects and nine training programs aimed at strengthening the province’s food production and job growth. The 19 new projects and nine training programs aim to help tackle critical challenges faced by food producers in B.C., including soil health, indoor agriculture, plant and animal health, Indigenous food sovereignty, and training opportunities.

The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development announced funding to establish the National Invention to Innovation (i2I) Network, expanding the award-winning Invention to Innovation program founded at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 2015. The groundbreaking program provides innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship training for students, researchers and highly qualified personnel in STEM and healthcare fields. Based on decades of research in science-based entrepreneurship by leading academics and practitioners, i2I addresses the major challenge of bridging the gap between Canadian invention and innovation.

Two Faculty of Health Sciences researchers at Simon Fraser University will partner with cancer patients, caregivers, family members and health care service providers to pursue projects in precision oncology, thanks to the Terry Fox Research Institute. The Patient Voices in Research initiative –designed, led, and adjudicated by cancer patients and survivors – is funding 10 team research projects across Canada, including the two being led by assistant professor of professional practice, Helen McTaggart-Cowan, and adjunct professor Samantha Pollard. The 10 investigative teams are receiving a total of $1.8 million from the TFRI’s Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre’s Network to conduct their research.

Simon Fraser University's Department of English celebrates the distinguished career of Professor Mary Ann Gillies who retires at the end of December. Department Chair, Professor Stephen Collis, pays tribute to Professor Gillies:Professor Mary Ann Gillies, who retires at the end of 2024, has had a long and distinguished career at SFU. After taking a PhD at Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar, Gillies began her academic career in SFU's Department of English in 1990, as a Canada Research Fellow.
