The Siuslaw News is a weekly publication that has been serving the community of Florence, Oregon, since 1904. This newspaper focuses on western Lane County, covering areas from the Pacific Ocean to Deadwood and Greenleaf, and stretching from Yachats in the north to Gardiner in the south. Previously, it was known as the Siuslaw Oar and The West. The newspaper is released every Friday and has a circulation of 4,000 copies.

    Siuslaw's track and field teams hit the ground running at the Special District 1 Championships on May 22-23. As a result of the Vikings' speed, strength, and precision, 19 athletes from the program represented Siuslaw at the OSAA State Track & Field Championships this past weekend. At the time of press, the results from the May 29-30 state meet are unavailable, so stay tuned next week for the full breakdown of the Vikings' exploits at the famed Hayward Field.

    Preparing crews for the summer and fall Oregon wildfire season has been ongoing for the past several weeks. The rugged training has been on the ground and in the air. The Oregon Department of Forestry’s (ODF) South Cascade District conducted an introduction to aerial firefighting for ground firefighters with a training component in the field on Weyerhaeuser’s property near Springfield, May 29.

    The Siuslaw softball season has wrapped up for the summer, and while there were some difficult losses and unforeseen challenges, the team weathered adversity to achieve worthwhile triumphs. One of the unexpected elements of the season was a change in head coach. After starting the season with Brian Riggs at the helm, assistant coach Amanda Richards stepped up midseason to the main gig in an interim capacity.

    Hundreds of runners jumped from the starting line at 9 a.m., sharp for the start of the 46th annual Rhody Run in Florence on May 17. The 5k and 10k run (and walk) started on Quince Street in Front of the Florence Events Center and snaked through areas of old town before returning to cross the finish line. 5KFirst to cross was Andrew Conger, 40, of Camas with a gun time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds.

    It took a little over two hours for the entire 2025 Rhododendron Days parade to make its way through Florence on Highway 101 and turn down Bay Street before dispersing near the carnival. All along the almost two-mile route, parade watchers lined the west sidewalk to see everything from live music to marching bands to traditional Mexican dancers to the Rhody Court royalty to a giant CROW perched on an ATV.
