The Siuslaw News is a weekly publication that has been serving the community of Florence, Oregon, since 1904. This newspaper focuses on western Lane County, covering areas from the Pacific Ocean to Deadwood and Greenleaf, and stretching from Yachats in the north to Gardiner in the south. Previously, it was known as the Siuslaw Oar and The West. The newspaper is released every Friday and has a circulation of 4,000 copies.

Siuslaw's track and field athletes have hit the ground running this season, and the hard work the athletes have been putting in has been paying off. Amid a busy schedule of competitions, the Vikings have been blazing the trail, with many team members scrawling their names in the Siuslaw history books. The work is far from over, though. Just about halfway through the season, there is still plenty of ground to cover and hurdles to jump. For Head Coach Chris Johnson, improvement is still the goal.

Many tables at the Florence Events Center were filled volunteer organizations so the Florence Area Community Coalition could show appreciation for them and the tireless work they do for the community. Brenda Gilmer opened the ceremony by noting that for local volunteer organizations, “Covid was hard, but look at us- We came back strong.”Gilmer said that while many organizations could not be present (or spare the volunteers to attend), the tasks of local volunteerism are often shared.

Siuslaw's softball and baseball teams kicked off their league schedule each by squaring off with South Umpqua, and the Lancers proved to be tough competition for the Vikings to overcome. While both teams went 0-3 in their series against South Umpqua, the Lancers showed what one of the best teams in the Far West League has to offer. Both of the Lancers' teams are rated among the top ten 3A schools in the state.

It might only be Amanda Richards' second year with Siuslaw School District, but she is already feeling at home in the community and is ready to take on the task of coaching the Siuslaw girls basketball team. But it isn't just about instilling a defensive scheme or tinkering with jump shot mechanics; Richards wants to help develop her players in other ways. "I accepted the head coaching position because I truly love coaching female athletes," Richards said.

Students, parents, community members and job seekers had many options to consider April 16 at the Bridge Lane Florence Event in the Florence Events Center. Similar in layout to the resource fair held last year at Siuslaw High School, interested people could speak to employers, find education and training, ask questions about insurance and healthcare, get help searching for jobs, help with child care and/or senior care, and even find specialized resources for the veterans and military community.
