    Billy Mills is a hero in many ways and to so many people. He was born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for the Oglala Lakota people. His Lakota name, Tamakhóčhe Theȟíla, loosely means "loves his country" or "respects the earth." It's a fitting name. He graduated from the  University of Kansas in 1962 with a degree in physical education and soon entered the United States Marine Corps as a first lieutenant.

    The Kinross Volunteer Fire Department has been at its hall located next to the General Aviation Terminal at the Chippewa Co. International Airport since the 1990s. Come this November, they will need to find a new home due to the lease expiring with the Chippewa County Economic Development Corp. (CCEDC). CCEDC Director Chris Olson said the building is needed for the airport's firefighting center and to house a new fire truck specifically for the airport.

    One could not ask for a better day to celebrate freighters Saturday at the Cozy Corners' Freighter Fun Day in Barbeau. Blue skies, the Kaye E. Barker and American Century passing by, fun trivia with awesome door prizes along with great food and company all made the 4th annual event a success. "This event gives people a chance to get out of the house as we just got through a long winter and warmer weather is here.

    Dafter Township Volunteer Fire Department along with Soo Township Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources are on the scene of a brushfire on 7 Mile Road just east of Mackinac Trail just south of Sault Ste. Marie. The call came in around 3:40 p.m. Sunday for a brushfire out of control. SooLeader took photos on the scene at 4:15 p.m. We will have more information when an official statement is released.

    On Saturday afternoon, the Dafter Township Fire Department responded to a fully involved residential structure fire in the area of Forest Side Road and 11 Mile Road. According to Dafter Fire Chief Austin Conway, the call came in at 1:12 p.m. with Dafter Engine-1, Tanker and Brush responding with nine Dafter firefighters. Conway states one of the residents at the house called 9-1-1. Mutual aid assistance was provided by Bay Mills Township Fire Rescue and Superior Township Fire Department.
