Families for Safe Staffing (FFSS) hosted a rally Sunday in Kincheloe hoping it sent a message to Lansing about ongoing concerns with staffing and worker-mandates at Eastern U.P. Correctional Facilities. Melissa Perron started FFSS after her friend's husband was mandated to work Friday, Saturday and Mother's Day Sunday. "That was the end of it for me," Perron said. "That was the catalyst. I felt that shouldn't happen. He couldn't participate in any Mother's Day weekend activities.

Rudyard Public Schools wrapped up their school year this past week by adding some color to their hallways. Superintendent Tom McKee came up with the idea for the Legacy Hallway project last year, which has students paint murals on the walls that represent the towns, and even ghost towns, that make up the Rudyard school district. Rudyard Schools Art Teacher Michelle Benson praised the effort the students put into the project. "It gives them a sense of belonging, a sense of community.

This past Tuesday, students and staff at Lincoln and Washington Elementary Schools in Sault Ste. Marie said goodbye to their buildings forever. K-1 students in Washington Elementary and 2nd-4th graders in Lincoln Elementary will now move to the current Sault Area Middle School and be a part of the K-5 Sault Area Elementary School. 6-12 grade students will now be together in the Sault Area Middle/High School.

The annual Sault Area Little League Fundraiser hosted by Alpine Chocolat Haus Tuesday was a huge success by raising several thousands of dollars. The warm weather coupled with the last day of school for Sault Area Schools brought in the crowds. After it was all said and done, just over $3,000 was raised with nearly 150 gallons of ice cream being served by around 30 volunteers. That money that will be used to make sure the young players have what they need to play ball.

SooLeader has this update on the structure fire that we first published Tuesday afternoon. Brian Bensel, Kinross Township Fire Chief, provided this official statement: On May 27th, 2025 Kinross Township Fire Department was dispatched to a residence on W Kallio Road at approximately 11:40 a.m. for a fully involved garage fire, garage attached to the residence. Kinross Fire Units E-3, E-6, and T-1 responded with six firefighting personnel.
