Concert Review: "Griot Gatherings" by We Black Folk

For two nights, Club Passim transformed into a celebration of the roots of Black folk music and the presence of Black folk in the local Boston scene. Sponsored by HipStory and BAMS Fest, “Griot Gatherings” was a two-night event held at the Cambridge venue as part of the We Black Folk project. More than just an important contribution to the local live music scene, it was an invigorating showcase of local Black talent within a variety of folk genres.

There wasn’t much room to move in the sold-out Sinclair, but British act Wunderhorse took whatever space was left and filled it with gritty rock from their latest record, Midas. The week of Sept. 23 saw a five-night celebration of the soon-to-be reopened Great Scott at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston. The event featured four nights of music and one night of comedy, all comprised of local acts. Many of the artists had performed at the original Great Scott location and reminisced fondly, while others were playing in Allston for the first time.

Concert Review: WITCH

WITCH (sometimes stylized as “W.I.T.C.H.,” for “We Intend To Cause Havoc”) are living legends. Hailing from Zambia, they’re one of the founding bands of a genre called “Zamrock” and released seven albums between 1972 and 1984. The revival of this band played at Brighton Music Hall on June 26 and brought the house down. The band’s story is truly incredible. The Zamrock genre emerged after a series of concerts by American funk and soul musician James Brown in Zambia.
