There wasn’t much room to move in the sold-out Sinclair, but British act Wunderhorse took whatever space was left and filled it with gritty rock from their latest record, Midas. Fans bounced like pogo sticks to the building refrain and thumping drums of “Rain” (“Do you feel the rain? / Do you feel the rain?”) and sang (well, shouted) along to “Teal”, in which band and crowd pondered together: “What if this is it?” 1/27/25 – The Sinclair

The sound of more than a dozen different instruments filled the Lilypad on Saturday night. But aside from the occasional cymbal roll and deep twang of the 6-string bass, the “classic” instruments of today’s (Western) bands were nowhere to be seen. Instead fans of Persian ensemble Raz Avaz and Armenian contemporary folk act Armadi Tsayn were treated to the sounds of centuries-old instruments like the kanun, oud, tar, doumbeg and kamancha.

Enter a Diasporan Armenian home and you’ll likely come across these decor staples: a Mt. Ararat painting, a framed թռչնագիր (bird letter) alphabet, a blue glass evil eye, an Armenian carpet, a glass jar of dried apricots or pistachios. But some homes now have replaced their traditional flowery bird letters for graphic designer Alek Surenian’s more modern take. The refreshed look uses a “flat” graphic style and a muted, curated color palette.

Longtime Boston music fans will recognize the soul rock of Aubrey Haddard and electronic hip hop of Haasan Barclay—both from their solo work as well as local group projects (The New Review, Camp Blood). Barclay also boasts impressive collaborations with artists like Khary, Kota the Friend, Topaz Jones as well as local favorites Cliff Notez, Bad Rabbits and Rilla Force.
