June 18, 2025South Burnett councillors have unanimously approved a proposal by Triple R Motorsports to build a motor sport facility on a property in Lewis Duff Road at Ballogie. The vote was taken at Wednesday’s Council meeting after a decision on the Development Application was delayed at the May meeting. Council officers had recommended in May that the application be rejected but Councillors put up an alternative motion that it be approved, subject to conditions.

June 18, 2025The University of Queensland has developed five new commercial varieties of pigeonpea as a step towards the legume being grown more widely in Australia. A program at UQ’s Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) has developed the drought-resistant pigeonpea varieties for tropical conditions. Project lead Dr Mahen Sabampillai said the project could trigger a new industry in Australia.

TRC Locks In Large Rate Rises

June 18, 2025Large rate rises for 2025-26 were locked in by Toowoomba Regional Council at a Special Meeting held on Wednesday. Mayor Geoff McDonald said the TRC had adopted a general rate rise of 9.5 per cent for urban residential ratepayers, ie. about $241 a year. As well, the water infrastructure charge for an average property would also rise by $83.30. Mayor McDonald said a $1.5 million surplus had been forecast.

June 16, 2025Kingaroy TAFE student Brendon Newman has won a Gold Medal at the 2025 WorldSkills Australia National Championships held in Brisbane last week. Brendon, who was competing in the Electrical Control category, represented Queensland after success at the regional South West competition last year. The Stanwell apprentice is completing an electrical instrumentation apprenticeship at the Tarong power stations. Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said Brendon had made the South Burnett proud.
Qld Bid To Stop Tomato Virus

June 16, 2025A control order was put in place in Queensland on Monday (June 16) in a bid to stop the highly contagious tomato brown rugose fruit virus from entering the State. The virus, which affects tomatoes, capsicums and chillies, does not pose any risk to human health. It causes yellow and brown spots to appear on leaves, fruit and stems. Infected fruit can also be deformed or ripen irregularly.

June 16, 2025The Yarraman Progress Association’s annual show’n’shine was back at Errol Munt Sports Reserve this year, attracting a field full of classic cars and hot rods. The line-up on Saturday included the usual range of very desirable Aussie Fords and Holdens as well as American muscle – and a few unusual entries, including a highly customised Morris Commercial truck. Wild Horse FM broadcast music across the grounds which added to the atmosphere as visitors browsed the displays.
