As South Durham residents gear up to celebrate Independence Day, here’s what to expect from the City of Durham in terms of closures, changes, and local festivities for Thursday, July 4, 2025. Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Thursday, July 4. Non-emergency facilities and operations will not be available for the holiday. No yard waste collection on July 4 – Friday’s yard waste route will instead be picked up on Monday, July 7.

Between June 15 and June 21, police responded to a broad range of criminal incidents across South Durham, according to incident reports. The week saw at least 27 motor vehicle break-ins and nine stolen vehicles, along with two residential burglaries and one commercial burglary. Officers also responded to seven simple assaults, two aggravated assaults, and two sexual offenses. There were eight reports of vandalism, seven fraud or forgery cases – including cybercrime – and nine thefts.

Perhaps the most consequential item for South Durham families on Thursday’s Durham Public Schools Board of Education agenda: a proposed pilot program to bring non-state licensed afterschool care to eight DPS elementary schools – including Pearsontown, Southwest, Murray-Massenburg, Lyons Farm, and Forest View. The move is designed to address chronic aftercare waitlists, which have affected hundreds of students across the district.

Celebration of life is planned for 12 p.m. on June 28 at American Cremation and Funeral Service in Durham. Rafael Castro Santos, 40, died June 16, 2025. Services were held on June 20.
