Sammy, Spencer, and I are on our way to Charleston to join the rest of the Tweedy band, play Mountain Stage, and induct Daniel Johnston into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. In honor of Daniel, here are two versions of “Walking the Cow.” This is one of Daniel’s more well-known songs. It’s been covered by a few people.

Hi, everybody. Here’s a work-in-progress from the studio. It’s pretty barebones, just Spencer and me. When I wrote it, it was two minutes long. Then it became four minutes. Then I cut four verses from the beginning, because they sucked, which brought it down to its fighting weight, 2:59. Then we added two beats. See if you can guess where they are. I haven’t decided where this song will end up yet—we’ve been working on a lot of material over here—but I wanted to share this one today.

Here’s one of many songs I’ve written to Susie. This one is a true story. I’ll let it speak for itself, and we can discuss in the comments. 2020 / March 19: On the very first Tweedy Show, Jeff debuts a new song called “Save It for Me.” The song will be released later on Love Is the King. 2023 / March 21: Wilco drops a 15-minute film on YouTube from the Carol’s Pub shows filmed in October 2022.

Crystal made an incredible video (in the same post). All sweet stuff keeping the ’ship going. The journey continues. This week I’m in the studio with a friend working on his music. You’ll hear more about it later.

If you aren’t familiar with Bill Fay’s music, you should spend some time listening to him. I still remember the moment Jim O’Rourke played Time of the Last Persecution for me at his apartment in Chicago. I couldn’t believe that this record wasn’t already in my life. It felt like I’d always known it.

I’m in the studio this week, so I’ll let this song do the talking. The lyrics feel like they could have been written today, but Woody wrote them in 1948 after news outlets referred to victims of the Los Gatos plane crash not by name but instead as “deportees.” The song has been recorded and performed by a bunch of the Greats, including Joan Baez and Dolly Parton, and I was reminded of it a few weeks ago thanks to Starship reader Dusty Petersen’s request. Many years later, author Tim Z.

Romantic love is complicated and can be pretty hard for a lot of people. So let’s just say that there’s a lot of love, and a lot of types of love. I’ve been thinking about this because Susie’s been organizing the archives from Lounge Ax, the bar she ran with Julia Adams for many years.

In the meantime, the giant A Ghost Is Born box set is coming out tomorrow. And while I don't tend to do a lot of straight-up promotion here on Substack (I won’t even link to it), it is pretty cool, so I thought I'd share a couple of songs before tomorrow’s debut.

Below I’m sharing1 the original demo. The song is about a specific interaction Susie's father had with Susie's mother when she was living at our house, in hospice and dying of lung cancer. Listen to the CCCI above for a conversation between me and Susie that tells the full story. It's a pretty intense one.
