    A short-handed Bravo’s Landscaping took on Straight Up Builders in the first game. Marco Gallegos opened the game with a double, and later scored for Bravo’s Landscaping. Bravo’s Landscaping had three base hits, a triple from Stephanie Martinez and a two-run home run from Luis Lazaro to bring home five in the second. Straight Up Builders got on the board in the bottom of the inning, using six base hits and two errors to score seven and take the lead.

    The council this week unanimously authorized the city manager to execute a contract to buy a fire engine for a maximum of $700,000. The council also increased the city budget by $600,000 to offset the cost. “As you recall, last council meeting we acknowledged the receipt of the grant agreement from Southern California Edison for $600,000,” said City Manager David Maistros. That grant, as previously reported, was to buy a new fire engine. “Now the fire chief did not wait around.

    In a celebration at the Avalon School Gym, the Lancer football team received their time-honored traditional memento, representing the team’s CIF-SS football championship, won in November. The team was presented with the traditional championship rings. And like most team championship rings, the bigger and gaudier, the better. “Oh my God, they’re amazing, I really don’t think they could have come out any better,” Head Football Coach Nick Morones said.

    Edison International recently offered to buy Avalon a new fire engine at $600,000. The City Council on Tuesday, March 18, voted 4-0 to authorize the city manager to execute the agreement. Councilmember Mary Schickling recused herself because she works for Southern California Edison. This was originally a Consent Calendar item, but was pulled for comments by Mayor Anni Marshall.
