The Coastland Times
The Coastland Times, which began its journey as The Dare County Times in 1935, was founded by D. Victor Meekins and his wife, Catherine Deaton Meekins, who hailed from Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Before starting this publication, Victor gained experience at The Independent in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, while Catherine came from a family deeply rooted in the newspaper industry in Mooresville, North Carolina. Over time, several related publications emerged to cater to the local community, eventually merging to create what we now know as The Coastland Times. Their children, Roger, Francis, and Mary Blanche, played a significant role in the paper's early operations. Francis succeeded his parents in the publishing role, working alongside his wife Virginia, their children, and grandchildren until he retired due to health concerns in 2005. Following this, Francis and Virginia's son, Warren Meekins, and daughter, Susan Simpson, took over the newspaper until it was sold in December 2017 to the Boone Newspapers Inc. affiliate, Outer Banks Newsmedia. Currently, the newspaper is managed by Theresa Schneider, who is the granddaughter of Francis and Virginia. The Coastland Times is published twice a week and has a circulation of 5,000 copies, serving the residents of North Carolina's Outer Banks, a popular vacation destination that includes Dare, Currituck, Hyde, and Tyrrell counties.
