Spring has arrived. I’ve written about the Masters before, quite a bit in fact. That’s because I find the tournament is delightful in so many ways. But in a broader sense I like annual traditions. Seasons mark the calendar, of course.

There was a wild story in the New Yorker about the theft of the Elvis bust that used to be in the window of Jones, our formerly beloved bar. That incarnation of Jones, with its curiously bright orange facade, closed in 2018 and it was a blow. Their special was a drink called the Shaggy, basically a Dark and Stormy, but with spicy ginger ale they had delivered every week from North Carolina.

A friend passed along this article saying publishers are increasingly reluctant to release paperbacks. What’s the world coming to? Where would our youthful literary recollections be without the familiar maroon cover of Catcher in the Rye or an ancient Scribner edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald? Paperbacks are beloved. They’re good for vacation, for passing along to a friend, for storing in your pocket. Paperbacks are on the mind because The Believer is out in paperback today.

There’s more: Paul Smith on 16th Street, The Oak Room and Louis Boston. Gone. Gone. Gone. These pillars of classic sensibility and a certain masculine taste are no more. Instead we have Suitsupply and UNTUCKit, where they care as much about tailoring as they do for punctuation.
