The Current is a nonprofit and non-partisan news organization dedicated to delivering thorough watchdog journalism for the communities of Savannah and Coastal Georgia. We hold the belief that journalism serves the public good and is essential for a thriving democracy, as it keeps those in power accountable, highlights public risks, and fosters a society grounded in reliable information. Operating under the Savannah-based 501(c)3 nonprofit Grey Matters Project, our newsroom maintains complete independence. We are funded by individual donations, memberships, significant philanthropic contributions, corporate sponsorships, and special events.

The specialized prosecutors would be based in “the Savannah region” and work under the Georgia Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit, according to budget documents. The $268,464 line item was included last week in an appropriations bill that awaits Gov. Brian Kemp’s signature before becoming a part of the state’s fiscal year 2026 budget.
