The Daily Cougar

The Cougar is released weekly on Wednesdays throughout the fall and spring semesters, with daily updates available online at thedailycougar.com. The University is committed to offering equal educational opportunities, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation. Funding for The Cougar partially comes from Student Service Fees. It operates independently and is managed by students within the Center for Student Media. A monthly meeting of the Student Media Advisory Committee is held to oversee the publication's development and address any public concerns.

Houston softball shuts out Houston Christian University 11-0

After a string of losses in Lubbock this past weekend, Houston softball came back to shut out Houston Christian University in an 11-0 home victory at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday. The Cougars’ offense powered their way to victory by recording 11 runs on 11 hits, leading to a run rule in the fifth inning. Freshman two-way Brooke Wells and sophomore infielder Makenna Mitchell both hit their ninth home run of the season, setting a dominating tone against the Huskies early in the game.

Houston softball bounced back from a tough weekend series against BYU, defeating McNeese State 10-6 in a midweek game at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday, March 25. The Cougars came from behind after trailing 2-1 in the first inning, scoring five runs in the second to take control of the game. Freshman two-way Brooke Wells was the standout performer, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, an RBI and a walk, while also contributing a key defensive play.

The Houston women’s basketball team faced a season full of adversity and challenges. The Cougars have often been down to as few as six available players, and three key players: senior forward Maliyah Johnson, senior guard Kateri Poole and senior forward Avalon Miller all sustained season-ending injuries. “It’s been a crazy year with all the injuries,” coach Ronald Hughey said.

Wednesday afternoon, President Renu Khator sent an email to the UH community explaining the impact of President Donald Trump’s federal orders regarding federal funding for research. Several science-based grants will be affected by the federal order that will reduce the cap to 15% on indirect costs to grants with several UH federal grants already paused or stopped.
UH rape suspect arrested, in custody

Tuesday afternoon, Eric Latroy Brown, 40, was arrested at the Texas Street and Emmanuel Street intersection. Authorities say Brown was riding the METRORail when a civilian spotted him which led to his arrest. “Investigators say an officer monitoring METRO cameras also recognized Brown. He was arrested at that intersection and taken into custody without incident,” said authorities.
UH confirms scooter robbery connection, suspect arrested

On Friday evening, UH sent out an email to students stating that the two scooter robberies on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 are connected and the suspect has been charged with two counts of felony robbery. Steven Marquize Simon was arrested on Feb. 12 for the scooter robberies and remains in custody. There are no updates on the robbery of a cellphone that occurred on Feb. 11 and the sexual assault that occurred on Feb. 7.

Wednesday afternoon, UH sent an email with updates to the UH community regarding the recent crimes on campus. The police believe the scooter incidents could be related. There is no connection between the robberies and the sexual assault. In order to combat the rise in crime, UH has doubled the amount of security officers on campus. Security is now stationed at six of the parking garages and 10 lots.
Letter from the editor: UH continues to fail its students

It saddens me to have to write this. What happened on Friday night should not have happened. It’s the accumulation of errors the University has failed to correct regarding their safety priorities. Time and time again, students have asked for better lighting, more security, a tighter leash around UHPD’s patrols and just an overhaul of the University’s concern for its students’ safety. It’s fair to say that the University has not prioritized student safety at all.
