In his autobiography, Miguel Antonio Otero, who served as the Governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1897 to 1906, referred to it as a Democratic publication that had a negative view of the Republican Party.

    Deming Police Officer Jesus Lopez Jr. was arrested outside Deming police headquarters on Thursday by officers with the New Mexico State Police. Although charges have not been released to the Deming Headlight by either Deming police or the State Police, KRQE News 13 reported Friday that the charges are of a violent and sexual nature.

    Voter participation was better than average in Luna County in 2024, with a total of 8.075 ballots cast, according to the Luna County Clerk’s Office on Tuesday evening. That’s a 58 percent voter turnout. Luna County Clerk Berenda McWright noted that ballots which must be hand-counted are not included in these unofficial results. New Mexico also came out to vote statewide, with 54.75 percent of registered voters casting ballots.

    Deming residents near the 900 block of S. Silver Street were awakened Monday morning by a loud boom that shook windows, rattled pets and was followed by a cloud of smoke. Deming police confirmed that a bomb detonated at about 7:30 a.m. at the New Mexico Probation and Corrections Building, located at 920 S. Silver St. The explosion was loud enough to have been heard off of Santa Catalina Street on Deming’s east side, and as far east as Pear Street.

    Members of the Deming Art Council will ring in a new year of art exhibits at the Deming Art Center, 100 S. Gold Ave. Each month, the DAC will plan a new themed exhibit that will showcase local artists in a varsity of mediums.

    Chelsea Evans handed out some big bucks on behalf of the Deming MainStreet program this week. “This is our fourth year awarding businesses for decorating and lighting their store fronts,” said Evans, executive director of Deming MainStreet. The contest was held in conjunction with the Christmas Lighted Parade and the focus on shopping small businesses during the first weekend in December. The Community Christmas Tree lighting also took place in front of the historic Luna County Courthouse.
