Eganville – Dozens of eager bikers lined up at the Legion Memorial Field at all hours of the morning Sunday to participate in the 14th annual Tour de Bonnechere. When asked how much work went into putting on this year’s tours, event organizer Bob Peltzer chuckled, “probably just a couple hundred hours,” he replied. While it usually takes months of planning, he said it always pays itself off without question. “A lot of work goes into it, but it also brings a lot of people to our area,” he said.

Killaloe – Not even the threat of torrential downpours could dampen the spirits of visitors to the opening night of the 48th annual Killaloe Community Craft Fair. Despite predictions of ‘massive amounts’ of rain last Friday presenting a few challenges, the special occasion pressed on rain or shine. After a while, the sky was clear again and the stars came out in time for their evening performances.

Eganville – Plans to double the Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre (SWOEC) parking lot are now well underway thanks to a $20,800 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. One of the Valley’s leading attractions, drawing over 4,000 students and even more visitors annually, is set to receive much-needed upgrades following the approval of a provincial grant.

Pembroke – Neighbours of The Grind aired their grievances at a town hall meeting last Thursday night hosted by city Councillor Ian Kuehl. Residents, parents and business owners of downtown Pembroke shared disturbing stories of drug use, fighting, pet abduction, defecation on property and abuse issues at a reverse town hall meeting at the 50+ Active Living Centre. “This is your opportunity to tell your story as neighbours of The Grind,” Coun. Kuehl told the audience of about 50.

Beachburg — Health officials from the Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) have warned residents of Beachburg and Haley’s Station of high sodium levels in the drinking water. Tests taken in January found drinking water in Beachburg contained 24.7 mg of sodium per litre, while Haley’s Station had 65.5 mg of sodium per litre, according to a press release from the RCDHU.

Dacre — Under a near-constant cover of clouds and rain, the annual St. Paddy’s Party was such a success that the Dacre and Area Community Centre (DACA) surpassed its maximum capacity and had to stop letting people in for only the second time ever in the event’s 40-year history. Sandra Chippior, chair of the organizing committee, said the event is her way of giving back. According to her, this party is unique to other St. Patrick’s events because it appeals to families instead of solely adults.
