Reconstruction work on 26th Street in Brandon is nearly set to begin, with only contractor bidding left before ground breaks next month. Mark Allard, general manager of development services for the City of Brandon, said the four-block stretch of 26th between Park and Victoria avenues isn’t in great shape, and that reconstruction is needed.

Sunrise Credit Union in Brandon is donating $4,000 worth of transit and fair tickets to evacuees from wildfires in northern Manitoba. “It’s Manitoba, it’s what we do,” said Heather Merckx, the credit union’s marketing manager. “Everyone comes together when people need help. It just means so much that we’re able to help in a small way.”Merckx said the credit union is spending half of the donation on 10-use transit tickets, which it gave away to people in need on Monday.

The Brandon area is expected to hit level 5 today on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s air quality health index. Wind is blowing smoke from fires in western provinces toward Westman. The level 5 rating is considered a “moderate risk.” The scale goes from level 1 to 10+. Christi Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said Westman hasn’t had a lot of smoke compared to the rest of the province.

The City of Brandon is set to review its Municipal Heritage Incentive Program. The program offers a reduction or exemption on municipal property taxes for sites that have significant value to Brandon’s heritage. Senior planner Andrew Mok said the city is mainly looking for feedback from heritage site owners right now but is also open to public comments on how the system functions. Mok said the main reason the program is being reviewed is that it hasn’t had any changes since 2017.

The opening of parts of the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex in northeast Brandon is more than a month delayed. Scheduled to be completed on Saturday, the soccer fields at the corner of Veterans Way and First Street North are now expected to be open sometime in July, according to City of Brandon acting director of sports and recreation services Heather Reimer. In May 2024, the city said part of the work would be done by May 30 of this year.
