We at The New Hampshire (TNH) condemn attempts to censor free speech. Free speech and freedom of press are intrinsically tied together and are both essential foundations of our democracy. We are upset by the violence that occurred against students on our campus this week and wholeheartedly support the rights of students to stand up for what they believe in. Please rest assured that we are working diligently to compile and report the facts regarding the events of May 1.

On Saturday, October 21, Arin Henderson received a text message with a picture of his organization’s pamphlets – shredded – laid on a table inside the Memorial Union Building (MUB) with a sign reading ‘free’ above them. Henderson is a junior Spanish student and the Chair of Alliance, an LGBTQIAP+ student organization at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) committed to making a safe environment for students and the Durham community.

In the spring of 2023, Justin Gagne walked into Thompson Hall (T-Hall) looking for someone, anyone, who could help him overcome his housing challenges. Gagne was a fourth-year civil engineering student living in Dover, New Hampshire, unable to afford his $900 monthly rent. Gagne lived in Dover with his mother prior to attending the University of New Hampshire (UNH). College was not the first time he experienced issues with housing; he was accustomed to helping his mother afford their rent.
