Power restored after squirrel-induced outage

Power was restored to Keene State College’s campus at 12:16 p.m. Wednesday following an outage that lasted over an hour, according to a KSC Owl Alert sent to the campus community. The alert urged those still without power to call Campus Safety at 603-358-2228. The outage was caused by a squirrel that was electrocuted at the switchgear behind the Owl’s Nest 3 building, according to Assistant Director of Facilities Services Colin Burdick.
The Dean’s List dilemma

For many students, finding themselves placed on the Dean’s List is an immense source of pride and honor, but for others, specifically transgender and gender-nonconforming students, it can bring about confusion and harm. The Dean’s List is a publication released at the end of every fall and spring semester that lists the names of students taking 12 credits or more who achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher, according to Keene State’s website.

Ian Kaplan named Keene State's coordinator of LGBTQ student support

The Cultural Center at Keene State will start to look full again as the college ended a six-month-long vacancy with the hiring of Ian Kaplan as coordinator of LGBTQ student support. Kaplan, a 2019 graduate of Keene State, was the inaugural Outstanding Alumni Teacher Award recipient in 2022, having taught sixth-grade reading post-graduation. Kaplan, a transgender man, said he wants students to feel seen and heard as he steps into the role.

KSC fraternities handed out a total of 16 bids following the formal Interfraternity Council (IFC) recruitment week. The recruitment week kicked off on Wednesday, Jan. 31, with a preview informational night on KSC’s four fraternities: Alpha Sigma Phi (Alpha Sig), Delta Tau Delta (Delt), Sigma Pi and Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). Bid day, Feb. 5, saw Alpha Sig handing out eight bids, while TKE gave out six and Sigma Pi gave out two. Delt did not give out any bids at the event.

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) became the first New Hampshire. college to indefinitely move its application deadline following another setback. UNH made the move on Sunday, Feb. 2, following an announcement by the Department of Education that colleges’ financial aid offices will not receive student financial information until March, according to a Feb. 2 article from WMUR.
