Right before Rosalind Wiseman ’91 was about to go home for Thanksgiving her first year of college, a group of her friends pulled her aside in her first-year dorm. In Pauley Hall, Wiseman said her friends shared that they had worked really hard to make her a nicer person — they were afraid that she would go back home to Washington,D.C. and go backwards.

Baltimore is one of the deadliest cities in the nation. In 2022, the police recorded 333 homicides for a rate of 58.4 murders per 100,000 people. The national rate for that year was 6.3.This is nothing new. In 1993, 353 people were murdered in Baltimore, a record high. From 1979 to now, the number of homicides in a given year only dropped below 200 once. The rate since has remained above 25. Baltimore journalist David Simon has covered crime in the city all of his working life.

Zoey HrabeThe Occidental Track and Field team hosted the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic at the Bill Henry Olympic Track March 9. The first event, men’s shot put, was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., and the meet lasted the entire day, with the final event, women’s 10,000-meter dash, beginning at 10:10 p.m. At the meet, pole vaulter Zoey Hrabe (first year) reached a height of 3.5 meters (11′ 5.75″), catapulting her to fourth all-time on the school’s pole vault leaderboard.
