In a workshop held on July 29, Port Lavaca City Council discussed 5-year Capital Improvement Plan for the upcoming fiscal year and beyond. During the meeting, council members and staff heard reports from department heads, Port Lavaca Fire Chief Joe Reyes, Port Lavaca Police Department Chief Colin Rangnow, Port Lavaca Public Works Director Wayne Shaffer and Port Lavaca Harbor Master Jim Rudellat regarding their capital improvement plans and needs.

During a report delivered to the Calhoun County Commissioners Court on July 31, Memorial Medical Center Interim-CEO Erin Clevenger shed a light on the hospital’s financial status, detailing several grant programs obtained as well as ongoing efforts to offset losses. According to Clevenger, the hospital still saw a loss for the month of June for approximately $123,000 due to contractual adjustments and indigent or charity care.

Scout Lively Jurek lives up to her namesake. She is a delightfully bright, fearless little girl with big blue eyes and a sweet smile, who loves pink and wants to work with babies when she grows up. However, the 3-year-old has faced many obstacles in her short life. In November 2021, the then 6-month-old baby woke up paralyzed from the waist down. “I was changing her diaper, and she just went limp,” said Scout’s mother, Brayson McGrew.

During its weekly meeting on July 31, the Calhoun County Commissioners Court approved several items, including the advertisement of bids for a HVAC and roof improvements project for Memorial Medical Center and the purchase of two dump trucks. Commissioners approved the specifications and contract documents for a new HVAC system for the county-owned Memorial Medical Center, alongside several improvements to the roof. Now authorized, G&W Engineers will be able to advertise the bid to contractors.

For those seeking a way to make friends, stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors, Port Lavaca has a new club designed for running enthusiasts and beginners alike. Organized by Andy Cardona, the Sole to Soul Run Club focuses on promoting a sense of community amongst runners while encouraging them to stay active and fit. The club has been running for around eight months, having begun last year in September. The name Sole to Soul, Cardona said, came from his other hobby of sneaker selling.
