With Champions in the books, now time for those who had good weeks at Oakmont. With light to moderate quibbling…Carlos Ortiz. Forgotten since moving to LIV and losing to teammate Joaquin Niemann, he delivered an impressive T4 finish. It’s the best-ever major finish from a player from Mexico and featured the strongest tee-to-fringe effort of the top 5 finishers with only Sunday’s double at the 15th marring an otherwise standout week. Now back to anonymity.

Plenty of winners from a wet week in Pennsylvania…J.J. Spaun. The U.S. Open produces its share of journeyman winners and Spaun could be the latest. Or, he might vault to unforeseen places after closing in 32, driving the 17th green, and making a putt they’ll talk about as long as people play the game. The opening 40 appeared to be less about nerves and a morning run to pick up some Pepto for his daughter.

Time to drop anchor. Oakmont’s nine-year wait since Dustin Johnson’s victory has arrived for the club hosting its first U.S. Open as part of the USGA’s non-rota rota. We know the drill in this part of Allegheny County: hit fairways, try not to audibly gag over too many putts, take those hackout licks with grace, expect weird stuff to happen, and all while trying to hover around par.

Under partly cloudy skies and much-needed (drying) breezes, Oakmont began to dry out Tuesday. While still soft by U.S. Open standards and on a collision course with an under-par winning score—the horror!—the course made huge strides today and should continue to firm up during Wednesday’s final day of practice. Large galleries once again came out to observe players as their growing entourages rejoined the fairways after laying low Sunday and Monday.

The skies opened up and turned blue for most of Monday, allowing an eager fan base to get their first look at storied Oakmont. The respite appeared short-lived when, around midday, the hard-working maintenance crew broke from routine (and their deserved midday nap) to top off the rough cut before as much as another half-inch of anticipated early evening rain. Watching the maintenance crew work made for better entertainment than logoclads turning every green into their backyard practice area.
