    Months after Helene, a chance meeting got work ongoing at the previously flooded Mountain City American Legion building. Located at 318 N. Church St., the local home for the 100-plus members of American Legion Post 61 has effectively been closed since Helene. When Helene hit on Sept. 26-27, the American Legion was flooded by Furnace Creek, which flows behind the building. The normally docile creek brought up to six inches of water and mud into the building.

    June 20 will be my 90th day as managing editor of The Tomahawk and Six Rivers Media. Also, it’s my 90th day being an editor in my adult life. This change from the previous eight years of being a writer has come gradually. My effort and time are more than just writing stories and taking some photos. The desire to just start writing stories is there, but I can’t spend all the working hours of the week writing stories.

    The Johnson County Longhorns Football team got to practice against helmets of a different color on Thursday, June 12, as they traveled to Elizabethton and Happy Valley High School to take on three other area teams in 7 vs 7 scrimmages. Head Coach Tyler Trusler said the team did well against Happy Valley, Unaka and North Greene. "Had some good positive surprises from new players," Trusler stated.

    Over 30 rising 6th through 8th graders showed up for the first day of summer conditioning for Johnson County Middle School Football. The practices go through the end of this week, followed by a dead period through the Fourth of July, then practice resumes Monday, July 7.
