    Water utility customers across Mountain City and Johnson County have expressed a wide variety of thoughts and concerns over the city council’s recent approval and vote to raise water and sewer rates. The council voted 4-1 vote (one pass) to raise the rates of 12% water and 15% sewer at its January public meeting with an effective date of the decision of March 1, 2025.

    A Johnson County man who has been on the run for weeks was shot and killed by law enforcement officers following a search warrant last week. Alexander James Russom, 40, has been able to evade authorities until a confrontation near his home that involved the exchange of gunfire. Russom was able to escape again, but the incident prompted the involvement of the Tennesse Bureau of Investigation and the subsequent shooting that left Russom dead.

    A group of hikers from Johnson County took advantage of the first day of 2025, courtesy of the Doe Mountain Recreation Area (DMRA). A free first-day hike with multiple trail options, including a guided nature walk with Jen Skarsaune, was on the day’s roster and, according to organizers, was a great success. Skarsaune is working toward her Tennessee Naturalist Program certification and volunteers regularly at Doe Mountain, offering free nature walks once a month throughout most of the year.
