City of Brevard surveillance equipment shows more than half of vehicles exceed the 25 mile per hour speed limit on Fisher Road with somewhat lower levels of violators on McLean Road. The city wants to take counter measures to slow traffic since the roads are close to Brevard Middle School. Data shown to the city council’s public safety committee found 53% of 1,019 cars monitored were over the limit on Fisher with a top recorded speed of 43 miles per hour.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will repave a lengthy section of Broad Street sometime this summer. Crews will grind old asphalt and repave the state roadway from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning on a yet-to-be determined date to lessen disruption to traffic and to businesses. Mayor Maureen Copelof told the city council’s downtown master plan committee the work will stretch from roughly the old Creekside Subs location to the Sunset Motel.

The city council’s downtown master plan committee continues to grapple with limited options as to where large trucks and vans should park without blocking traffic or carving away more precious downtown parking spaces for cars. The crux of the dilemma is an unwieldy loading zone on Jordan Street that often snarls traffic.

The city of Brevard has arranged an informal meeting between a housing developer and residents concerned about the impact of 68 new homes on West Probart Street. Mayor Maureen Copelof told the city council’s public works and utilities committee the meeting has been set for June 13 and will include the Florida developer and six citizens from the surrounding neighborhood.
