By David Porter Adam Munds was back in front of the Tuscola City Council Monday to seek permission to plan another RC Fest for next summer. The festival showcases remote-controlled cars, trucks and boats. Munds said it’s good, family fun. He plans on bringing back the monster truck demonstration, and he wants to add a sand racing feature next year. He also holds a blood drive in conjunction with the event.

By David Porter Tuscola High School’s new quarter-million-dollar scoreboard is touted as being one of the largest in the state; certainly the largest downstate for a school of this size. But not all of the fans will be able to see it on game day. Stan Wienke, former head football coach for Tuscola, addressed the School Board Monday night to express disappointment with the improvements made on the sports field. He said 14 percent of the new bleachers “are useless” due to obstructed views.

By Gabriella Agius “There’s a couple of really bright spots to the start of this year,” said Superintendent Carol Munson. The school district received the Healthy Meal Incentives Grant as well as the Teacher Vacancy Grant during the Villa Grove School Board meeting on Aug. 21. The Healthy Meals Incentives Grant is provided by the USDA. This grant allowed the district to receive a new oven and refrigerator. A salad bar is also on its way.

By David Porter Sidewalks were sidelined at Monday’s Tuscola City Council meeting. Mayor Dan Kleiss said the bids for general sidewalk work came in much higher than expected. He said part of the problem may be timing. He suggested that the Council relet bids in the spring and combine this year’s sidewalk budget with next year’s budget, which may generate more interest and thus, more competitive bids.

Final cost expected to be between original estimate and the bid By David Porter Phase 2 of the City of Tuscola’s downtown improvements plan will cost more than what was first imagined, but how much more is to be determined. The lone bid for the work came in at $1,316,887.36 from Feutz Construction, Inc. in Paris. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $1,063,700.
