The Vermilion is the recognized student newspaper of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, serving the campus since 1904. It covers a range of topics including university news, student viewpoints, and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun sports. This newspaper is run completely by students for students, with new issues published every Wednesday and fresh content available on the website daily. Well, it is finally time to close the book on my time at Student Publications. Every year I read these letters written by my fellow coworkers, wondering how will I sum up my three years at a job that has taught me so much? What memories will I write about? Who will I thank? I ask myself these questions as I get closer to the end of my undergraduate education. I first came into this job as an 18-year-old freshman, not knowing how crucial this newspaper would be to my college career.

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team lost two games at home to the James Madison Dukes in last weekend’s conference series. Losing the series brought the Cajuns to 19–22 in overall record and dropped their conference standing to 5–9. In a press conference held Apr. 7, Head Coach Alyson Habetz opened by talking about what she views as the reason for the close walk-off losses that have plagued the season.

SATIRE – APRIL FOOLSOne day, I was just sitting in my lair (it’s not an evil lair, just a normal lair) thinking about how Gonzo is the best Muppet, when a bang and a white light just appeared out of nowhere then it was gone. In its place was a box that was literally calling my name, “Marie open the box.” When I finally got the courage to open the box a familiar song started to play.

When I was in high school, I was a member of the school’s speech and debate team. One of the events that all freshmen and sophomores on the team were required to do was called Declamation. The event entailed the competitor reciting an already existing speech by memory in front of a judge. Normally, the speeches would be a Ted Talk and within a 10 minute time limit, the speaker would perform the speech.

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s softball team split wins in both their matchups last weekend, going 2–2 in their Spring Break Showdown. In Tuscaloosa, AL, the Cajuns faced the Iowa Hawkeyes and the No. 21-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 7-8. These wins put the Cajuns at a 13–9 overall record and proved the team has the firepower and pitching prowess to compete with the best teams in the Sun Belt. In a press conference held Feb.
