Weekend paints with Plein Air

The Shadows-on-the-Teche saw 25 artists from across the country come to compete in the Plein Air Quick Draw and Paint Delcambre events this weekend. Saturday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m., artists had two hours to paint a scene in downtown New Iberia. Several artists chose to paint the streets of the district, while many others chose to paint at the Shadows. After a tense session, Missouri-based artist Chris Willey took second place, while California-based artist David Savellano took first.
Two must-see events in New Iberia

The New Iberia Parks and Recreations Department is hosting their annual Festival of Live Oaks 9 a.m. at New Iberia City Park while the second Super Saturday Downtown Shopping event happens downtown at 11 a.m. March 16. The Festival will primarily feature an adult and youth division Barbecue Cook Off as well as live music and a variety of booths aimed toward kids’ entertainment, including sweet and crafts booths, a petting zoo, fun jumps, pony rides, train rides and face painting.

Over 80 blacksmiths and metal workers attended Louisiana Metalsmith Association’s (LAMA) two-day blacksmithing conference at the Sugar Arena this weekend. Each year, the LAMA blacksmithing convention features a different metalworking demonstrator to share unique ideas on working with metal.

Larry Moses served nearly 30 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, while Barney Holt was sentenced in life in prison for simple possession. Tuesday night, they told their story at the Innocence Project New Orleans Stand for Justice Acadiana event. The event was aimed to inform the greater Acadiana community about the work IPNO conducts in freeing wrongly-convicted or harshly-punished individuals from prison. It had 30 tables with 280 guests.

New Iberia Senior High partnered with the City of New Iberia and STEM NOLA to bring another Saturday STEM event. This is the second of three events. It was significantly smaller than the first, with a particular focus on two separate activities, making a parachute and building a propeller car. This is aimed to give kids a more intimate understanding of the topic to inspire them towards STEM careers.
Delcambre Seafood and Farmer's market makes long-awaited return

Over 1,200 people attended the first Delcambre Seafood and Farmers Market of 2024, Saturday, March 2. The market included a full roster of 60 vendors throughout the port pavilion selling everything from honey to sweatshirts. Aaron Davis played live music throughout the event, but each month features a different musician. It also features a unique menu, with the market offering crawfish fettuccine alongside shrimp and sausage jambalaya. Each year, the vendors apply online for the whole year.

The Main Street bar, Napoleon’s, celebrates local artists with a weekly songwriter night every Monday starting at 6:30 p.m.This songwriter night is the only free-to-attend and consistent event promoting local songwriters in New Iberia. The songwriters night initially started in September of 2022, when local musician Victor Hollingsworth proposed the idea to bar owner Barry Guillote.
Developing community success with the Iberia Parish career fair

The City of New Iberia is partnering with Marlon Moore to host a working-class focused career fair Wednesday, March 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MLK Recreation Center on the West End Circle. Starting at 8 a.m., interviewers will assist applicants with resume prep, and starting at 10 a.m. the job fair will begin. Several organizations will be involved in the event, including Acadiana Workforce Solutions, Louisiana Workforce Commission and Job Corps.
