The Waterways Journal

The Waterways Journal

The Waterways Journal serves as the primary news source for the towing and barge sector of the inland waterways in the United States, focusing mainly on the Mississippi River and its tributaries, along with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Our clients include barge companies, ports, terminals, fleets, shipyards, refuelers, shippers, suppliers, and marine contractors that contribute to the inland waterways transportation network. Collectively, our audience manages over 25,000 barges and more than 3,500 towboats and tugs. Often referred to as "The Riverman's Bible," this publication has been in continuous operation from St. Louis, Missouri, since 1887. It stands out as the only American maritime periodical dedicated solely to inland waterways and is among the few remaining family-owned, advertiser-supported weekly trade journals. Our comprehensive news coverage offers insights into the people and technologies that drive a significant segment of industrial transport in the U.S. We report on a variety of topics, including inland shipyard activities, construction of locks and dams, updates from the Corps of Engineers, dredging operations, inland ports and terminals, as well as the construction and launching of barges and towboats. We also cover advancements in towboat technology and regulations set forth by the U.S. Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, and other federal entities impacting inland waterways commerce, alongside news about key commodities that navigate these waterways, such as grain, coal, steel, and fertilizer.
