Memorial event planned for much-loved manager of Keynsham restaurant

A memorial gathering will be taking place next month at the Empire of India in Queens Road in Keynsham in honour of the restaurant’s manager who died earlier this month. Alongir Miah, known to many as Alon, passed away on Friday 9th May. His funeral was held privately in accordance with Islamic traditions. However, there will be a memorial open to everyone to remember and honour him on Sunday 22nd June at 6pm.
Campaign raises thousands for retired teacher after fire devastates his Willsbridge home

A fundraising campaign for a retired South Gloucestershire teacher whose home was gutted in a blaze earlier this month has so far generated donations totalling more than £6,600. Nicole Shellard launched the GoFundMe campaign after the devastating fire at her neighbour Frank Woodman’s home in Bath Road, Willsbridge, on the evening of Tuesday 20th May. The fire also damaged three sheds and fire investigators believe the cause was accidental.
Brislington man stole from Keynsham town centre shops to fund his drug habit

Bath magistrates have ordered a prolific shoplifter to pay compensation of more than £3,300 to the Keynsham stores he stole from. The court heard on Wednesday, 28th May, that James Maggs, of Wyndham Crescent in Brislington, stole items from Boots, Savers, Poundland and the independent gift and accessories shop Trigaci. Maggs admitted four charges of theft and asked for 10 similar shoplifting offences to be taken into consideration.
People urged to report door-kicking incidents

The Bitton & Parkwall policing team say they are aware that people in the area are still having issues with young people kicking on doors and running off, but incidents are not being reported to them. Earlier this year we reported that officers had identified six young people after a spate of anti-social behaviour in the Cadbury Heath, Oldland Common and North Common area linked to a TikTok craze which involves running up to people’s doors and kicking them hard before running away.
Crews from three fire stations involved in dog rescue in Keynsham

Crews from three fire stations have helped rescue a dog in Keynsham Memorial Park. Crews from Bath, Temple, and Bedminster were called at 3.10pm on Tuesday 20th May to reports of a dog on an embankment by the water.
Need for emergency food parcels across Bristol & South Glos remains high

The Trussell Trust foodbanks that serve Bristol and South Gloucestershire provided 38,700 emergency food parcels to people facing hardship between April 2024 and March of this year, with 14,400 of these for children. The three foodbanks – North Bristol & South Glos, South and East Bristol, and Bristol North West – have together seen a 4% decrease in the number of emergency food parcels distributed compared to last year.
Countdown to Mangotsfield Village Festival

The 33rd annual Mangotsfield Village Festival takes place on Saturday 14th June. The traditional parade will set off from the village green near The Lamb pub at 10.30am and head for Johnson Road Playing Fields where the festival will be held from 11am to 8pm. There will be attractions including live music and dance, stalls, and food and drink. Each year the festival raises funds that are distributed to organisations within the community.

A fire at a derelict property in Oldland Common at the weekend is believed to have been started deliberately. The house is on land next to Siston Brook at the bottom of California Road and there have been previous incidents of anti-social behaviour there. A planning application to develop the site for housing has been under consideration by South Gloucestershire Council since 2023.
Free bus travel extended for care leavers in the region

Young people leaving care aged up to 25 will now soon be able to travel free on buses in the wider region, thanks to funding secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council. This new investment is an extension to the popular existing scheme for 18 to 21-year-olds, which has been running since November 2023. Each young person in the West Country who takes up the current offer saves up to £950 a year.
Another B&NES Council by-election expected after Lib Dem councillor steps down

A by-election is expected to take place soon for the local councillor who represents Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg after the current member for Mendip ward on Bath & North East Somerset Council stepped down. David Wood became the first Lib Dem to ever represent the council seat in 2019, when he unseated then Conservative council leader Tim Warren. Cllr Wood was re-elected with an increased share of the vote in 2023 but has now resigned.
