“Can you see them now?” I asked my hunting partner looking across a vast winter wheat field through a binocular. The “them” in question were two tom turkeys racing to our calls from more than 1,500 yards away from our current position. Buffeting winds silenced their return gobbles, but through the power of a 10-power binocular I could see them stop and return a wind-muted gobble to my calls. Although the show was great, I knew we would have to find cover to call the gobblers into shotgun range.

One of the most exciting, and effective, ways to lure a gobbler into shotgun or bow range is the use of turkey decoys. That’s no big secret. But successfully decoying gobblers is more than randomly putting out a couple feeding hen decoys and hoping it all works out. With today’s incredibly lifelike decoys, you can vary the type you use, how many you use, and where you place them, depending on the time of the season and how birds are acting.
