Established half a century ago, the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism has produced over 2,000 graduates. Many of these alumni have achieved recognition by winning nearly every significant industry award and have taken on roles in leading news organizations across the nation. Known as one of the premier journalism programs in the United States, it stands out as one of the few remaining two-year master's programs in journalism in the country and is the sole graduate-level journalism program within the extensive, publicly funded University of California system.

    Applications are open now through February 15 for the Bloomberg Business Journalism Diversity Program, in partnership with UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. The program welcomes undergraduate students who are interested in learning about business journalism, and they’ll explore how journalists report effectively on the economy, companies, financial and commodity markets, government and labor, where wealth and power converge.

    The competitive Marlon Riggs Fellowship that honors filmmaker Marlon T. Riggs (’81) — now in its tenth year — has been awarded to UC Berkeley Journalism Documentary Program students Neenma Ebeledike (’25) and Zane Karram (’25). The fellowship celebrates the life and work of Riggs, an alum who taught in the school’s Documentary Program more than three decades ago. He died at age 37 in 1994.

    Two current Berkeley Journalism students and 15 alumni were honored last month in the San Francisco Press Club’s 47th Annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards, which celebrate the best journalism from the region. The winning entries represent extraordinary local reporting on everything from the housing and mental health crises, to deadly interactions with law enforcement officers regionally, to local election and immigration coverage and the safety of countertop fabrication workers.

    First-year UC Berkeley Journalism graduate student Erin Sheridan (’26) has been named this year’s Dorothea Lange Fellow by a multidisciplinary panel of judges. The judges, who are photographers, curators and academics, also awarded Fikremariam Gedefaw, a Ph.D. student in political economics at Haas School of Business, an Honorable Mention.
