Balancing schoolwork, friendships, new living situations, grocery shopping, part-time jobs, taxes, remembering to buy dish soap and so on, rarely does there feel like a time when my brain is quiet. When I have time, I go for runs or read books for pleasure, but sometimes I need a stress reliever that doesn’t actually require me to change the activity I’m doing.
Workers strike across UC on May Day

AFSCME union files 2 charges against the UC, citing systemwide hiring freeze

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, Local 3299 has filed two new unfair labor practice charges against the UC Board of Regents regarding the recent systemwide hiring freeze and alleged denial of employee benefits to certain workers. In one of the charges AFSCME filed with the California Public Employment Relations Board, or PERB, the union alleges that the UC system failed to provide notice and enter into bargaining prior to imposing the hiring freeze.

City Council considers reapplying for state speed camera program

The Berkeley City Council will soon consider a resolution advocating for the city’s participation in the California Speed Safety System Pilot Program. The program, established under Assembly Bill 645 and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in October 2023, allows participating cities to install automated speed safety systems, such as cameras or radars, to ticket speeding drivers.
