Undeniably, college is a stressful period of life. Balancing schoolwork, friendships, new living situations, grocery shopping, part-time jobs, taxes, remembering to buy dish soap and so on, rarely does there feel like a time when my brain is quiet. When I have time, I go for runs or read books for pleasure, but sometimes I need a stress reliever that doesn’t actually require me to change the activity I’m doing.

One of the first things I noticed after coming to the United States was how frequently people move. When asked where they’re from, people often say something such as, “I was born in D.C. but moved to California when I was five,” or, “I grew up in Texas but went to high school in Illinois.” Americans never seem to question these kinds of answers, but they puzzle me. What’s the reason behind so much uprooting and starting over?
