United States Institute of Peace
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is a federal organization dedicated to fostering conflict resolution and prevention on a global scale. It offers research, insights, and training for those involved in diplomacy, mediation, and various peace-building efforts. After many years of discussions about creating a national "peace academy," the USIP was officially founded in 1984 through legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Ronald Reagan. The institute operates as a nonpartisan and independent entity, relying solely on funding from congressional appropriations to maintain its impartiality. It is overseen by a bipartisan board of directors consisting of fifteen members, which includes the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, and the president of the National Defense University. These members are appointed by the president and require Senate confirmation.
