United States Mint

United States Mint

When the founders of the U.S. Constitution established a new government for their experimental Republic, they understood the importance of having a trusted monetary system. Before this, the currency in the U.S. was a mix of foreign and colonial money, as well as livestock and crops. Shortly after the Constitution was approved, Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury, took it upon himself to draft plans for a national Mint.
