The Stanley Cup Final ended this week, in a finish that was sadly a little predictable. The Edmonton Oilers found that four wins in a row was a tough ask, and Game 7 included the kind of unfortunate luck that can make playoff hockey so thankless. Ah, well. Good try, fellas. You had some magnificent beards. But all the focus on the Final drew attention away from a story that passed by quietly.

The image above is a screenshot of the don’t-call-it-Twitter account of Lianne Rood, Member of Parliament for the fine riding of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. It is incredible. Leaving aside the hilarious bit about calling a paper coffee lid “woke,” as though anything with an environmental benefit is proof of some mad leftist agenda, she might actually have a point about the quality of these lids. Maybe they do, in fact, fall apart too quickly, as can happen with paper straws.

The funny thing about watching Wrexham AFC play at their home stadium is that the recent history of the once-beleaguered club is told by the electronic advertising hoarding that surrounds the pitch. There are the ads for famous international brands like Gatorade, United Airlines, and Kellogg’s, which in any normal circumstance would be far too fancy for the signage in a 12,000-seat ground that houses a club in English football’s fourth tier.
