The Stanley Cup Final ended this week, in a finish that was sadly a little predictable. The Edmonton Oilers found that four wins in a row was a tough ask, and Game 7 included the kind of unfortunate luck that can make playoff hockey so thankless. Ah, well. Good try, fellas. You had some magnificent beards. But all the focus on the Final drew attention away from a story that passed by quietly.

The image above is a screenshot of the don’t-call-it-Twitter account of Lianne Rood, Member of Parliament for the fine riding of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. It is incredible. Leaving aside the hilarious bit about calling a paper coffee lid “woke,” as though anything with an environmental benefit is proof of some mad leftist agenda, she might actually have a point about the quality of these lids. Maybe they do, in fact, fall apart too quickly, as can happen with paper straws.

The funny thing about watching Wrexham AFC play at their home stadium is that the recent history of the once-beleaguered club is told by the electronic advertising hoarding that surrounds the pitch. There are the ads for famous international brands like Gatorade, United Airlines, and Kellogg’s, which in any normal circumstance would be far too fancy for the signage in a 12,000-seat ground that houses a club in English football’s fourth tier.

Two seasons ago, on the eve of the Toronto Blue Jays’ opener, I wrote something about the tyranny of expectations. I liked that expression, and thought at the time that I was stealing it from Shakespeare or something. Turns out it was just a bunch of self-help weirdos. But, still: tyranny of expectations. It seemed appropriate for a team that, after a rebuild and a COVID-induced exile, was finally back to being a World Series favourite.

Here is a bit of how-the-sausage-is made from my newspaper-editor days: When pages were constructed, blank boxes were used for the ads, and one of the last steps before a page was sent to press was to import the ads and print the whole thing out for a final look. This allowed you to make sure that ads weren’t mistakenly repeated, or in rare cases, inappropriate. Even more rare were unexpected conflicts with the surrounding editorial content.

There is a moment during the second episode of Arctic Ascent when the six-person expedition team is hit by a snowstorm while on top of a glacier in Greenland. One of the members says they should stop and hunker down. He quite obviously has a point. The sky is the same colour as the white ground, and, being on top of a glacier, there are no landmarks at all for navigation. They might as well be standing in a snow globe, post-shake.

This isn’t a rule that has been codified or anything, but when a team wins a championship, the front office usually gets a grace period. A few years in which the normal complaints about trades and picks and acquisitions made or not made are quieted, and when the fan base’s trust level is higher than usual. It’s been five seasons now since the Toronto Raptors won their championship. The grace period is up.

For a brief moment there this week, the running-back narrative of recent NFL seasons was being turned on its ear. Saquon Barkley, formerly of the New York Giants, signed a US$12-million-per-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Josh Jacobs, recently a Las Vegas Raider, got the same annual salary as Barkley to join the Green Bay Packers. Were running backs, the increasingly fungible asset class of NFL players, making a comeback? They were not. Joe Mixon was cut by the Cincinnati Bengals.
