Texas Hill Country River Region, which manages Uvalde County’s hotel occupancy tax, is seeking a new director for the third time in about three years. Hailey Hart Conrad notified area businesses June 3 she was resigning, two days shy of her one-year anniversary as director. Conrad is working through June 30. THCRR oversees county hotel occupancy tax income and expenditures, with about 25 percent allocated for river cleanup efforts and the rest for tourism promotion.

Sabinal resident and UPS driver Tyler Cox is opposing a motion to dismiss the $14.75 million lawsuit he filed in April against Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell and the county. Cox’s nine-page filing, dated May 9 but not officially entered into the court record until May 23 due to addressing errors, claims the defendants’ motion to dismiss is “premature and jurisdictionally void.” Cox says he hasn’t yet served Mitchell and the county with the lawsuit and plans to file an amended complaint.

Uvalde City Council confirmed former Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden Captain Gustavo Sorola as the new municipal court judge in a 5-1 vote on May 27. Mayor Hector R. Luevano made the motion to appoint Sorola, who retired in August 2012 after a 30-year career with Texas Parks and Wildlife. This was the second time Luevano appointed Sorola and his third attempt overall to fill the position. Per city rules, the mayor nominates the judge, and council confirms the appointment.
