    Uvalde City Council confirmed former Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden Captain Gustavo Sorola as the new municipal court judge in a 5-1 vote on May 27. Mayor Hector R. Luevano made the motion to appoint Sorola, who retired in August 2012 after a 30-year career with Texas Parks and Wildlife. This was the second time Luevano appointed Sorola and his third attempt overall to fill the position. Per city rules, the mayor nominates the judge, and council confirms the appointment.

    After 43 years hosting Hunters Roundup in November, the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce has moved the annual event to Sept. 12 to coincide with dove season. The UACC Hunters Roundup was previously held on the Friday evening before the general whitetail deer season opens in November. The event originated in 1981 as an appreciation dinner for visiting hunters, and has expanded, offering a wild game dinner, resource booths, a band or mucsical performer and more as the years progressed.

    The county’s legal counsel filed a motion May 6 to dismiss a multi-million dollar lawsuit that UPS driver Tyler Cox filed against Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell and the county. Newspaper staff asked to view courthouse video footage of the conflict that led to the lawsuit, and the attorney said there is no footage because the county was installing new cameras.

    Sabinal Independent School District is offering free summer meals for children age 18 and under in Uvalde County through two programs, with one a meal delivery service sponsored by a $28,500 grant from the No Kid Hungry Texas program. Nonprofit Share Our Strength launched the No Kid Hungry program in 2010. Sabinal ISD received a $15,00 grant last year.
