BELEN — Belen Consolidated Schools students and parents can mark their calendars for Monday, Aug. 4, as the first day of school. The Belen Board of Education unanimously approved the 2025-26 student calendar for BCS on Tuesday, April 8, with a start date of Monday, Aug. 4, a three-day Thanksgiving break and final day of classes on Thursday, May 21.

ALBUQUERQUE — It was an impressive, and somewhat frantic, Monday for Belen’s Sophia Cox and Los Lunas teammates Dominique Armijo and Demetrio Pino at the prestigious Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex. The three were among those invited to the meet based on the top eight marks and times this season across all classes in New Mexico.

JARALES — A Sandoval County man was shot and killed in Jarales at the end of March after an apparent exchange of gunfire. Valencia County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday, March 31, after reports of gunfire at a home on the 200 block of Jarales Road. The residents at the house told the dispatcher people were outside the house, shooting them “in an apparent attempt to kill them,” according to a press release provided by the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office.

That’s what the New Mexico Activities Association wrangles with from time to time when a new sport or activity is proposed for consideration, such as powerlifting and girls’ wrestling in recent years.

A quick scroll of the Valencia County Fire Department’s Facebook page from mid-February through April 5 shows 19 posts of crews on scene at various structure and field fires around the county. “And those aren’t even all of them. Some of these were on burn days,” said VCFD Chief Matt Propp. “That was really the trigger, seeing these really big fires on controlled burn days with good weather.
