ALBUQUERQUE — It was an impressive, and somewhat frantic, Monday for Belen’s Sophia Cox and Los Lunas teammates Dominique Armijo and Demetrio Pino at the prestigious Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex. The three were among those invited to the meet based on the top eight marks and times this season across all classes in New Mexico.

BELEN — It is a bit of a gamble, moving a sure thing to something that has high potential but no guarantee. However, Oscar Medrano, Belen softball coach, and Shyla Rocha talked it over and made the move. That move was about 60 feet. Rocha went from first base, where she was selected first team All-State last season as a freshman, to second base.

The Belen boys and girls are among the top contenders in 4A this weekend at the Powerlifting State Championships at Rio Rancho Events Center. Nine boys and nine girls will lift for the Eagles, among the largest contingents in 4A. The girls are up Friday, with 132-pounder Valeria Banuelos ranked No. 1, and Anida Clayton, second ranked at 165, leading BHS. The Eagles were fifth in 2024.

BelenDespite losing a key member of the defending 4A state champion 4 X 800 girls relay team, Belen is preparing to make another run at the title. Seniors Lisette Sanchez, Sara Martinez and Avery Carter return to the lineup, while sophomore Genevieve Sanchez takes the spot held last year by Angelica Romero, who graduated. Genevieve Sanchez, no relation to Lisette, admits to a little pressure, but, “It’s an honor because these girls are so fast, and I really look up to them.

Wild spring weather, featuring high winds and snow, played an April Fools’ Day joke Tuesday, impacting baseball and softball games in and around Valencia County. In advance of the predicted challenging weather, games between Belen and St. Pius were postponed. Valencia completed its softball game against Grants, but the Jaguars’ baseball game at the defending 4A champions was called off mid-contest because of snow.

AlbuquerqueTheir efforts didn’t result in any trophies, but Belen, Valencia and Los Lunas performed with plenty of heart and soul last weekend at the State Spirit Championships in the Pit. “It’s fun. I just love it,” said Kiara Parra, who took the floor for VHS in the cheer competition. Belen senior Aaliyah Cordova added, “It’s a different type of feeling — this is what we worked for since last June,” all for a routine that lasts around two minutes.
Valencia County athletes secure NMAA scholarships

Three Valencia County high school students — one each from Belen, Los Lunas and Valencia — have been awarded New Mexico Activities Association Foundation Scholarships. Nearly 350 students from across New Mexico submitted applications in 26 categories, with 66 total recipients, totaling $79,000. Receiving $1,000 scholarships are Jadarose Wright, BHS; Daniel Altobello, VHS; and from LLHS, Madison Aragon. Wright believes her community involvement helped land the “We Go Above.
Home sweet home, finally, for Tiger baseball

The baseball season is almost 30 days old, and Tuesday Los Lunas (8-6) defeated St. Pius 4-3 in the Tigers first home game. In addition, after playing in four tournaments, it was the first stand-alone game for LLHS. “We’re 13 games in, 13 road games in, so we’re happy to be home,” said Paul Cieremans, LLHS coach. “We’re excited to get our fans here, get a familiar atmosphere.”Monday, the Tigers completed a murders-row schedule of 5A teams in the Metro Championship.
