The Belen Eagles will lead the charge for area teams this week at the State Tennis Championships, which will be held in Albuquerque at Jerry Cline Tennis Center, Sierra Vista West Tennis Complex and Albuquerque Academy. Both the BHS boys’ and girls’ teams captured District 5-4A titles, advancing to the 1-4A team competition Friday and Saturday at Sierra Vista. The BHS boys’ seeded fifth, will play Silver while the No. 5 Belen girls will open against Los Alamos.

Los Lunas and Belen have advanced to the state baseball playoffs, taking part Friday and Saturday in the opening round best-of-three series. Valencia was not selected, ending the season with a 10-15 record. Another impressive season landed the Eagles (18-8) a No. 4 seed in 4A, hosting No. 13 Chaparral (15-11) in the first-round. “We not only wanted to make the playoffs, we wanted to host,” first-year coach Justin Miller said about a team goal to start the season.

All three local softball teams qualified for the post season. Los Lunas and Belen were fully expected to be in their respective brackets, but the addition of Valencia in the 4A state tournament came as a surprise to some. A new format for the 4A and 5A tournaments has been introduced, with the top four seeded teams each hosting a quadrant with a total of three games.

ALBUQERQUE — Despite not taking a first-place medal, Sophia Cox, a Belen sophomore, had one of the most impressive efforts Friday and Saturday at the Richard Harper Invitational at Albuquerque Academy. With state qualifying times (SQ), Cox was the runner-up by the narrowest of margins in three events at the talent-laden track meet. Cox was second in the 100 meters (12.27), 200 meters (25.69), and 400 meters (58.63).

As the final week of the regular season began Tuesday, all six Valencia County baseball and softball teams were victorious. Post season brackets will be revealed Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.
