    ALBUQUERQUE — It was an impressive, and somewhat frantic, Monday for Belen’s Sophia Cox and Los Lunas teammates Dominique Armijo and Demetrio Pino at the prestigious Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex. The three were among those invited to the meet based on the top eight marks and times this season across all classes in New Mexico.

That’s what the New Mexico Activities Association wrangles with from time to time when a new sport or activity is proposed for consideration, such as powerlifting and girls’ wrestling in recent years.

    BELEN — It is a bit of a gamble, moving a sure thing to something that has high potential but no guarantee. However, Oscar Medrano, Belen softball coach, and Shyla Rocha talked it over and made the move. That move was about 60 feet. Rocha went from first base, where she was selected first team All-State last season as a freshman, to second base.

    The Belen boys and girls are among the top contenders in 4A this weekend at the Powerlifting State Championships at Rio Rancho Events Center. Nine boys and nine girls will lift for the Eagles, among the largest contingents in 4A. The girls are up Friday, with 132-pounder Valeria Banuelos ranked No. 1, and Anida Clayton, second ranked at 165, leading BHS. The Eagles were fifth in 2024.

    It was midafternoon, straight up. With the flow of magical words drying up while typing at the computer, it was time to get up, stretch the legs, clear my head and take a walk. Medical experts agree, it’s good for your health. Not in this case. On this particular Tuesday, my work-break walk was a little different, opting for a slight change to the routine.
